1.6.10 GET THE NET
Hey,
I've managed to trip and fall into the 21st century, most recently discovering the magical world of internet and social networking, tweeting...and now...the webcam, yes...a webcam.

I regret to inform you that I probably won't be turning out any Bobby D internet porn, but I'll be happy to play a quick song upon request if you catch me at the right place and time. I won't be streaming any vids quite yet, but I can record and upload faster than vegas wedding vows.

Some dirt...I am doing pretty well lately since you so kindly asked...went through a little rough patch in 2009, but I'm feeling healthy and ready to take on the world again...I'm hoping it shows on the new record. Shouting out to all my friends and family: I LOVE YA
Happy Two Thousand & Ten

8.7.09 MORE ABOUT THE NEW RECORD
Hello friends,
It's been a busy month, trying to get the new album in progress, between recording session rehearsals, drum tracking, my car blowing up on me, many rent-a-cars, etc. I've hardly had time to be your friendly neighborhood myspace prince. If you can please accept my sincere apology, you will be allowed to continue reading without having to type in a 'captcha'....

you accept??? splendid!

I'd like to thank David Odom for coming into town from L.A. to add his flavor to the record. This guys got some serious chops behind the drum kit, as well as some tight hand percussion skills! Phase one of the album recording process, consisted of taking the first 4 songs I came in with, and trying to tighten them up enough to be 'singles', and ready for radio.

I learned a ton, and it was enlightening to have an elder, experienced, studio cat to work with. We began in the rehearsal room, with 6 tunes playing each song at least 700 times, finding the pockets, grooves, and tempos. The audience at least needs a solid beat to dance, bob their heads, or pump the gas pedal to, ya know. Then it was time to make a few edits.....we were working on 'The New Reality', which is only about 2m/30sec long, but it seemed like it was dragging out, and a little redundant and boring. We through in a full step modulation (that means we brought the pitch up by two notes), which I'd never done before, but it was definitely refreshing for the song.

"Love-Tripper" (formerly 'Dream of Love') was a last minute decision for the record. It was a real pain to rearrange it, especially since it was more of a live, jamming song. But we gave it a great funk meets latin feel, added a bridge, and I even re-wrote just about all of the lyrics. It's my fav track we laid down, and I'm hoping to intro the record with it. Can't wait to get the rest of the tracking done.

2 of the tracks would be fade outs (the last fade out I recorded was "95") I am happy to trim these songs up. I admit it was frustrating at times having to cut anything, but I have no complaints with the bed we've laid down. Keep in mind, I am an egotistical artist and see no problem in making each song an epic, 6-7 minutes long. Besides, I grew up with Metallica, Bohemian Rhapsody, November Rain.....Working on these 4 songs, and trimming them to 3-4 minutes, bringing out the hooks, has made them rock even harder than before we cut the fat away. I'm excited to get to work on preparing the rest of the record.

Stay posted, can't wait to have something new for all of you to rock out to!

6.17.09 REALITY & the MACHINE
Those of you that packed into the infamous Tommy's Place in Providence, really got a good taste of my first album of tunes before I recorded anything. '95', 'Everything', 'Sunrise', 'All She Wrote', 'Wait for You' were all written the summer before I ever performed in front of anyone, the rest of the tunes all grew from the live performances, 'Secret' just popped in my head one night and hasn't changed from the first arrangment. I based choosing the 11 songs on 'Best Kept Secrets' on the great feedback...granted I had about 50 other tunes at the time...

We've all grown up a lot since then, some of us would say 'not so much', but we have...and we've all had our share up ups and downs, life experience, not to mention we live in much different of a world than it was at the turn of the century. The more we live and breathe, the more people we meet, addictions we overcome, personalities we click with, or completely clash with, people we fall in and out of love with, the people we think we fall in love with, and secrets that tear our hearts up, we can look back and say with a single scoff/laugh: 'damn, that was nuts', or 'I really did that? Really?', or 'man I was out of control!'. Life can be as crazy as you allow it to be. A good balance works for me, personally...you can't have calm without controversy, and vice versa. There are things in everyday life that make one person laugh out loud (), and would make someone else go out and murder someone() ...or the people who are torn between those two cases that just punch a wall as hard as they can and laugh while their friends sign their cast ().

With that said, the new record has a lot to do with now. It has a lot to do with going through the ringer and finding who you are, seeing what your heart and soul are made of, and dealing with these everyday, or one-time-only life situations. It deals with being single, it deals with being in a relationship, it deals with hating the fact that you're single, and yes, it deals with hating the fact you're in a relationship. It's going to have a lot of honesty and sarcasm, but at the same time it will be a positive record. 'When Did You Become A Bitch?' will not be making the cut, nor 'Woman Be the Death of Me', or 'Shoot 'Em Up!'...sorry kids!

I really don't want to break down each song and tell everyone the meanings and individual stories, I know how they spun out of my head, I think this time the listening audience needs to think for themselves, and feel however way they want about the lyrics.

I've always been a fan of songs that get you in the mood...
...to dance of course, what did you think I meant??
On a musical level, all I'm saying is that there are some good grooves...the songs on 'Best Kept Secrets' and the other 'acoustic' albums were written and made to be acoustic guitar based. The new record will still have some of those signature sounds, but some tunes will be based off of other instruments. A couple tunes are driven by piano, some have a more drum/bass feel. I've been doing a lot of electric guitar driven tunes with the band, but I didn't want this to be a hard rock record, so only expect a handful of those. Some light horn and string section arrangements will be in the mix, but just to add some ambient color. The most important thing to me is make each song shine, not bastardizing anything by having symphony orchestras and every animal at the farm doing tracks, I'm keeping everything simple, and bringing the bells and whistles out for the live performances.

The release date isn't set just yet, I'm still working and getting the songs stronger. When and where is still up in the air, but I am looking forward to throwing together some great parties and events to get all of the fans and friends togeteher, leading up to the release party. You guys have kept me going, that's why I'm going to make this record a great one. Thanks for your support! Fans, friends...and family.

6.1.09 ALIVE
As many of you may already know, it's been a difficult month for myself, the band, and some friends of ours. I do not consider myself an ultra-religious fanatic, but your thoughts and prayers are welcome, our families are going through some hard times.

A few weeks ago, I hopped in my car on a whim and made the 30+ hour drive to the East Coast to be with my family...only stopping to fill my car up, and suck down enough energy drink to stay alert in case of crossing wildlife. I needed it, I told myself...just lock myself in a box until I ran out of things to think about, songs to sing to myself, relationship drama to dwell upon. In a way I could just mentally magnify everything and catch my breath. I really needed to get out, having no phone service for 17 hours was freakin awesome! Humidity: I forgot how comfortable it felt.

During my brief visit, I'll be honest, the tears came and went and I admit that I was more angry to have been so far away than anything else. I base my life on turning all of these crazy emotions into songs...guess I either lock all the juicy stuff away, or I can't write quickly enough...plus my schedule's been so busy it's been nearly impossible to sit and work on something new. I think the drive back to Colorado was long enough to meditate and piece some music together in my head and unlawfully scribble lyrics on the back of my mapquest printouts...

I remember I started doing this whole music masterplan to rebel against the whole routine of things. I hated school, I was completely miserable...I left all of my friends behind, my family, just to get out and try to re-find myself. I guess you could say I wanted a new identity all together. Don't get me wrong, I'm so greatful to have been trucking along and making it happen. I'm greatful for the people that believe in me, who trust me and love me. I've been burnt up, burnt out...still kicking and don't regret a thing.

So...here I am, awake at 6am, got in a work-out, ate some breakfast, opened my planner, filled it so much it's spilling over the edges. A few hours of promotion and networking, rehearsal tomorrow, meetings, phone calls, gig Wednesday, work Thursday, rehearse Friday, 2 gigs on Saturday, work Sunday. This is one routine I could live for.....time to get this album recorded.

4.20.09 TWITTER & FUBAR: GO TO HELL...no white castle for you! SUCCESSES OF WEB NETWORKING
Bluntly... Fubar sucks...Twitter is laaaaaaame...

I send my deepest apologies to my mailing list for having them suffer through Spam email after Spam email from Fubar. I'm really not 'waiting for you to connect with me' there.

Upon my Fubu confirmation I was prompted to add some invitation email addys. Fubar sent these email addresses some "Join Bobby Doran on Fubar emails". So...long story short...if you didn't join immediately, they continued to send you emails....now I have a thousand pissed off mailing list subscribers...yay!

About Fubar...it's a social networking site, like myspace and facebook, but more lame. Quite honestly, it blows. And if you're an artist/band like myself, and spend hours on end on the computer already trying to promote, book, market, and update...then it's a waste of time. There's so much going on with each page, it takes forever to load...it's almost completely silly.

But...if you are 10-15 and like spending all day rating people's pics and buying drinks for people, accumulating profile points and are in the friend race, knock yourself out...like Facebook.

TWITTER............................I'm reluctant to join, and don't see much of a point in following people to the grocery store, or the mall, or the bathroom.

I think if I really wanted to waste my time, I would just play The Sims online all day...at least that way you can watch your characters pee all over themselves, and add some tombstone fung sheweee to your interactive living room...

Yes, I thrive on sarcasm...It just sucks getting pissed off mail because Fubar sucks, haha.
=========================================

I write some blogs on CMB's site and the Denver Music Board about some social/web networking techniques that I've found some success with. Here's an excerpt: (much less sarcastic, but some good insight).............

"Mr. Frosty, you've warn out your welcome!
We are trading in our hot cocoa mugs for some Margarita glasses, and hoping that May 5th won't aptly be named, 'Cinco De Frio'.

SOME NEWS======
New music is on the way and I'm excited to share it with the masses. Until then, we're doing a million promo shows to help build our mailing list, and strengthen our music community.

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT NETWORKING=======
When we haven't been gigging / working, it's been just as beneficial to go check out shows and meet other bands, and see what they are doing to bring their music to a higher level. Meet some of their fans, introduce ourselves, start convos, etc. I believe bands should go on 'dates' together, check out other local shows...besides, what looks cooler than when a motley group 10-15 dirty, bearded, tattooed, music guys walk into a local bar to check out some bands? Plus, the bands on stage love it too. Hanging up random posters and spreading flyers across town can be totally pointless, and I think it takes time and money you could be spending on safe alternatives...spend time putting yourself out there to people, sell yourself, and don't waste the demos you spend hours pressing and labeling.

POSITIVES & SUCCESSES OF WEB NETWORKING======
Wonderful Myspace has been the most user-friendly social networking site...# of friends is not important, I think I might actually interact with only 20-30 of mine on a weekly basis, blogging and bulletining regularly, feature a new song weekly (first song that plays).

Requesting a million hot chicks can be fun..., but browse your target market in your target location. Send semi-professional, and personable messages, introduce yourself and don't plug yourself on Itunes or shows just yet, don't type 'Check out my Band!" in the subject line. Don't SPAM people, just put yourself out there and tell them what you're trying to do in the scene and the music community...instead of being another friend icon buried among 100s & 1000s. If they write you back, then go a little deeper, invite them to events, GET THEIR EMAIL for your list, PHONE # too! My band throws some Fan/Friend parties every month or two. We play/rehearse a few songs, get some guys and gals on an open microphone, or on bongos...have some food/drinks, really try to bring people together that normally wouldn't hang out.

Now...when the big 'Band Showcase' comes up, your draw will grow, new fans will bring new friends. Myspace is great, but use it as a tool to network connect and actually hang out with people...at parties, at shows, on and off stage."

3.30.09 A BOBBY DORAN vs. THE FEMALE SPECIES
Women....

women...

As the saying goes...'you can't live with them...
you can't count on them to stick to a plan...
you can't expect them to take good care of your credit card...
you can't lend them your car...
you can't make female myspace friends...
you can't engage in casual conversation with attractive females...
you can't take them to the mall on a weekend...
you can't beat them once in a video game, or they quit...
you can't go out to dinner without seeing their ex...
you can't go to a bar with them and have her admit that the tattooed, muscle-bound bartender used to  be her fiance...
you can't have 'friend-girls', but she can have 'friend-guys'...
you can't grow a beard...
you can't escape the monthly tirade!!...
you can't wear shoes in the house...
you can't use all the hot water because she needs a hot bath...
you can't listen to heavy music because it scares her...
you can't watch MTV anymore because there are no videos...
you can't watch anything, but E! tv...
you can't play guitar too loud...
you can't call them, they don't answer, only text...WHY!!'
With all this to consider...yes I will be your date
I can't live without you...
I can't sleep...
I can't cancel the reservations...
I can't return this...
I can't warm up the rare steak, or it will be medium-well...
I can't talk to your parole officer for you...
I can't text on my phone...
I can't modify my 'Top Friends'
I can't stop people from commenting on my page...
I can't help it that the person who commented on my page is posing half-naked in front of a bathroom mirror...
I can't help but wonder if you have been married before...
I can't help but wonder if you designed your own lower-back tattoo...
I can't live without this, women keep me in business

To all you beautiful ladies out there, love/respect
Good Weekend to ya

3.13.09 ALBUM SONGS, TRACKING & STUDIO

We've been putting a tight group of tunes together for tracking/arranging. In the mix, are 'Secret', 'Satellite', 'Woman', 'Turn This Car Around', 'New Reality', 'Clever Girl', 'Black Coffee', 'Soldier of Desire', and 'Turn Me On' just to name a few.

I really want to let folks into my sick and perverse imagination on this one, plus want the album to flow and tell a story, beginning to end. Some awesome special guests, producers, and engineers are involved in this project, but I can't let the cat out of the bag just yet.. :) Let's just say I'm excited and very positive about the weeks to come. With that said, come jump on the bandwagon, this project will be very special.

In the process of trying to piece together an album packaging concept, I obviously want everyone to purchase/order hard copies. We've been throwing around some great ideas, leaning towards digi-paks, 'going green', bonus material, and a Studio Documentary DVD bonus. Another idea was having some ring tones, and all kinds of formats to keep the sound quality high for MP3 converting...

What else?...I'm hitting up the studio today to run through a few tracks/arrangements. Stay tuned to the blog/vid diaries for updates.

3.5.09
TUNE IN TO 101.5 FM FOR MUSIC BUZZ MINUTE...and more
Cool stuff is happening this month for the 'serious collector': "95" is now streaming @ www.coloradomusicbuzz.com, where the lovely Charlotte D'Aberrant is at it again, calling me a "John Mayer Sound-Alike" Well, thanks Charlotte, I'll take it as a smart business move. In the words of Donald Trump: "YOU'RE HIRED". Promotion is a good thing.
And...Denver fans: Listen to the MUSIC BUZZ MINUTE all this week on 101.5FM, Bobby Doran gearing up for new album, and website shout-out. "Bad Reputation" plays in background. Listen to streaming version, at www.myspace.com/musicbuzzminute.

What's up,
This is Bobby DorAN, or Dorin, or Duran (I'm still confused myself)
I've been working tirelessly between gigs, going through some material for the new record. I've been lucky enough to recruit a strong listening committee of ears to aide in the re-writing and arranging process, which is super helpful to feed my ego, as well as help me trash some songs I've had some bias towards, haha. We're working as a real team to really use the Simon Cowell appoach and bring out all the flaws. My first steps have been to throw all the possible songs into a funnel, I've had a ton of music on the back-burner, so to speak, now what'll sound best with all the fixins!?
For the most part, we want to shorten some tracks, and I agree that there might be room for about two, 6 min tracks on the final record (MAYBE). Sooo...that means there will have to be some heavy re-arranging and pulling apart songs. I've already narrowed things down a bit, but try choosing like two of these...when it kills me to have to change songs around when I've been playing them for so long: "Woman", "Black Dress", "Boogeyman", "Waiting for the Sky To Fall", "It'll Be Alright", "Elle Kedward". Not to mention songs that have no reason not to be between 3 and 4 minutes.

I've worked on taking "like" songs, and smashing parts together, which has worked great to some extent, even sparked some new ideas for lyrics. "Say Anything", for example might be a great fit for the album. The most fun part thus far of the whole process has been taking my old ideas and really creating a good story from the original words, stuff that didn't hit me until I spent hours re-reading verse after verse asking myself "what the hell am I trying to say here?"
Granted I can still add some musical breaks to the live shows, I agree that it's best to do the re-writes to the best of my ability to improve the album as a whole, most of all, so I don't have to look back and have any regret whatsoever with what I should've, shouldn't have or could've done.
Special thanks to my proof-readers & rough track listeners, you know who you are!
Plus, stay tuned for some possible big-names taking part in the record. Cool stuff. Until next time

2.17.09 THE CITY NEVER SLEEPS
...larger doses of nyquil
What's up everyone, I am here in the always breathtaking New York City, hanging out with my ol laptop at the bar inside Hard Rock Cafe all up by Times Square. I want to give a shout out to the astounding David Hannan for taking some amazing press photos all across New York City yesterday. We got some great shots for the new website and for possible album art. From outdoor fun, to lounge/grungy black and whites. Thanks David!

I highly reccomend the open-faced steak, yum.....that is if you are a fan of mushrooms and bloody rare meat. I love the stuff. Talk to yall soon. Ya know after all these silly blogs where you just write to no one in particular, I would like to say that I am thankful to all the good friends in my life who I do get to speak with in person on a daily basis. You know who you are cause I probably spent an hour on the phone with you before I left it in that taxi two days ago. Yep, I need my phone back...

If you live in the CO area, be sure to drop a line to Blue Eyed Omen, Jason Vigil, Sometimes Why, and just about everyone on the friends list. GO OUT AND SEE LOCAL BANDS!!! Get involved, we love new friends to help us do the damn thing. Interested in the music business? Us acts know 1/2 of jack about it, but still prob more than you do, and have cool stories to share along with all the other bands we play with. We love to hang and chat with people. We look forward to our gigs, cause we spend 8 days a week talking them up and hoping we get to introduce ourselves to new fans and friends when we get to rock out on stage. Keep up the support! come to the next band showcase on March 6th!!!!
-B

2.12.09 PRE-PRODUCTION IS UNDERWAY FOR THE NEW ALBUM
Pre-production is underway, I'm narrowing down to about 20-30 songs to tweak for the new record. Been trying new arrangements, lyric adjustments, trying to find the best combinations of old and new material to lay down in the studio.

If you've been a fan of 'Best Kept Secrets' from the start, this one will really move you, both musically, and lyrically. I'm looking into some string, brass, piano arrangements, and some killer hooks. Most of all, plenty of pockets to keep your heads moving.
Here are a few tunes that might make the cut, and be sonically viable for the studio (at least on my mind right now) I would hate to cut any of these, but the best thing to do is give the record a track by track vibe, with different beats going on and maybe two slow tunes, keeping the listener attentive, and giving them a good ride, front to back...:

Bad Reputation, Woman, Let Me Down, Line Up, Secret, To Dust, Turn This Car Around, Oh Jenny, Rule the World, 84, She's A Mystery, Brand New Day, Soldier of Desire, Elle Kedward, Car Crash, Seventeen, Generation Come Together, Music of Your Sound, Shoot 'em Up, You Said These Days Would Come, Party Don't Stop, Messin' Round On Me, In the Eyes of A Hurricane, The Great Unknown, Crystal Ball, Hi Speed / Slow Motion, Satellite, Silent Films, Black Coffee...there are plenty more I don't have in front of me right now, I'll post a better list as we get closer to tracking.

I will do my best to keep a weekly vid diary from here on out, especially once I get into the studio, and prepare for mastering and release. Tracking and production will begin no later than June. Stay tuned!
Happy Valentine's Day
-Bobby

1.27.09 SIX-LEGGED COWS LOVE TO PARTY...experts say
Amidst the craziness of the usual "who is this female celebrity"? (Angelina Jolie, George Wendt, or Eminem - click one and find out when you will die), the "Need A Girlfriend", "Will You Marry A Hottie"? ads, I fell onto one of today's featured videos which happened to be a news story about a six-legged cow from Bavaria. I rarely deviate from my usual myspace stalking, but it was interesting looking enough for an impulsive mouse-click. You should check it out too!

Vet's say Lissy the cow is perfectly healty...aside from the odd looking extra extremities, hanging from her lower regions, which could possibly be an undeveloped twin. Aside from the shock factor, the cow's daily habits are very normal, and sure to be raised the same as the other cows, no special privilages. Yes, that means a likely skim milk candidate with no Kobe beef treatment, unfortunately.
But be sure to keep eating at McDonald's for a taste!

Sorry Lissy :(
